A 13-year-old teenager girl, rescued from a suspected child marriage has told the ordeal of how she was raped by a 25-year-old man from Ha Molai in Ribaneng, in the district of Mafeteng, from April 17.
The suspect was according to police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli apprehended by the police on Saturday April 25 on suspicion of sexually assaulting the girl.
The teenager has told police she had been sexually assaulted by the perpetrator for eight (8) days since she was handed to the man.
Superintendent Mopeli said police learned that the perpetrator was given the teenager by her sister aged (28) under pretext that she would be staying with him.
“We are investigating the matter further so as to ascertain why the girl was given to the perpetrator,” Mopeli said.
Mopeli further noted the teenager had been “sexually assaulted since April 17 to 25 when police officers intervened after having received a tip off.
“The suspect was said to be getting ready for marriage by the end of this month. It seems he made the victim his wives or rather think she is”.
Mopeli further appealed to the nation that child marriage is a criminal offence.
“Whoever gives up a child to be married while under age to enter into a marriage is seriously violating the law. A person who marries an underage person is an abuser and the crime is classified as statutory rape,” said Mopeli.
