A local poultry enterprise, Mon Foods yesterday opened its large-scale poultry abattoir and retail outlet in Ha Thetsane.

The abattoir at its opening had over 6000 birds being processed from October 27-30.

Thabo Stephen Monyamane, Mon Foods Managing Director told KDNews they participate in various stages of poultry product production.

Monyamane said they have a distribution channel that is retail, followed by the abattoir which is a process of manufacturing, and the farm which is where the chickens hatching, growing and harvesting occur.

He said Mon Foods is in the process of increasing its hatchery capacity in order to increase from the current 3000 to 24 000 birds a week.

“Which means we will be able to hatch more eggs, grow chickens, slaughter, package, process and distribute them and do retail,” Monyamane explained.

Monyamane said the farm produces 12 000 chickens a week.

But he adds that their plan is to produce as many chickens to meet the abattoir’s daily 27 000 slaughtering capacity.

Monyamane said the Mon Foods enterprise currently has under its employment 60 employees whose number is expected to increase to 100 in December.
