Agricultural minister Tefo Mapesela was this week after he openly questioned Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro’s attendance of a feast hosted by former Prime Minister Thomas Thabane’s family last weekend.
Mapesela received his marching orders on Wednesday this week and said he cannot question his dismissal as it is just like his appointment by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister which is a prerogative of that office.
But, Mapesela who has clearly announced his clique in the All Basotho Convention—referred to as Mokhonto—wants party deputy leader Professor Nqosa Mahao as the party’s face in the 2022 elections and not Thabane said he was not surprised he is axed immediately after questioning Majoro’s attendance of the past weekend party.
Another faction in the ABC seemingly led by the Thabane family’s son in law and party secretary-general Lebohang Hlaele has disputed Mapesela’s claims and said the party will go to the 2022 elections with its campaign face as its founding leader Thabane amid his declaration of being tired and in need of retirement.
Mapesela, after the party, prior to receipt of dismissal letter had said Majoro will have to answer why he “went to kneel” to the former first lady Maesaiah Thabane who is believed to be working close to party secretary-general.
Mapesela said they as members of parliament who supported Majoro’s appointment as Thabane’s successor to the Premiership should have also at least been informed and or invited to accompany Majoro to the party and be the ones to decline the offer.
He has said Majoro never informed them that he would be going to the party hosted at the former prime minister’s home located in Makhoakhoeng village of the Abia constituency.
Mapesela said a meeting of the Mokhonto has already been called to convene and grill Majoro over his stance in the ABC’s intraparty skirmish now that he parties with a group of MPs who never supported his appointment as Prime Minister.
Mapesela also said Majoro will have to explain himself to the Mokhonto when its caucus meets.
However, Mokhonto’s caucus had not even met when Mapesela received his dismissal letter from cabinet.
Majoro advised the King to sack Mapesela following his utterances that the decision was announced by the Prime Minister’s Spokesperson Buta Moseme.
Sources who spoke to KDNews on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals alleged Majoro had been frequenting Makhoakhoeng recently more than some of the Thabane family heavyweight supports in an unprecedented shift in allegiances within the ABC.
The sources further said after the sacking of Mapesela probability is high that Mahao may also end up being chopped off from both the party deputy leadership position and also the ministerial position.
Mapesela, who is also the Mokhotlong constituency legislator now has as an archenemy the former first lady who has reportedly transferred her party membership to the Mokhotlong constituency in order to prepare to contest for part candidacy come 2022 elections.
The former first lady’s move has since agitated Mapesela as an outright campaign for his Mokhotlong constituency seat.
