Major General Lekhanya and wife laid to rest

Major General Metsing Lekhanya and his wife, Mrs Sophia ‘Masebitsa Lekhanya were laid to rest today at Ratjomose in a state funeral.
Major General Metsing Lekhanya was the commander of the royal Lesotho defence force and head of the government of Lesotho under the rule of military from 1986 to 1990. Major General Lekhanya was also a member of the Basotho National Party.
He died on January 20th at Makoanyane Military hospital and his wife Mrs Sophia ‘Masebitsa Lekhanya soon followed him days later.
Speaking at the funeral, one of the deceased’s daughters, ‘Marethabile Khathibe said her parents both had Diabetes, a health issues they have lived with for several years.
On behalf of the Lesotho defence force (LDF), the Commander Lieutenant General Mojalefa Letsoela said he learned a lot about the command of the LDF from General Lekhanya through numerous visits to his family.
“I thank Major General Lekhanya for his wisdom on commanding LDF, I will always remember his teachings, ” he said conveying his condolences to the Lekhanya family.
The Prime Minister of Lesotho Dr. Moeketsi Majoro said Lesotho has lost one of the patriots who worked and fought for their country with determination.
He said Major General Lekhanya stood and took lead when Lesotho’s political landscape was clouded by a number of challenges.
His Majesty King Letsie III also offered his heartfelt condolences to the Lekhanya family and friends for the loss of two members of their family.
He said General Lekhanya and his wife’s death came as a shock as it is in rare cases where a husband and wife follow one another in death as they did.
