Lesotho’s judiciary has lost yet another legal guru in the passing of her Ladyship, Justice Lisebo Chaka-Makhooane.

Justice Chaka-Makhooane ‘s untimely death comes after she was according to a memo titled Obituary notice to judges from the Registrar of the High Court and Court of Appeal Advocate Mathato Sekoai, admitted at Maseru Private hospital late yesterday.

Sekoai says the judge passed on today in the morning hours. Nuanced details of her passing are still unknown but KDNews has learned from the grapevine of allegations that she may have passed on due to a respiratory-related complication

Chaka-Makhooane is a third judge that Lesotho loses after the passing of Justice Maseshophe Hlajoane in 2019 and the passing of Justice Lebohang Molete in May this year.

“It is with great shock and sympathy the Honourable judges are regrettably informed about the untimely passing away of Justice Lisebo Chaka- Makhooane. The Office of the Registrar is in contact with members of her family and the honorable judges shall be informed of any further developments, reads the obituary notice memo issued by Sekoai.

News of the untimely passing of the judge was also disclosed by the Acting Chief Justice ’Maseforo Mahase today when she was supposed to hear a case in which the Lesotho Congress for Democracy leader former deputy prime minister Mothetjoa Metsing and Movement for Economic Change leader Minister Selibe Mochoboroane are charged with treason.

Justice Mahase said due to the passing of her colleague Justice Chaka-Makhooane it is only appropriate for her to postpone the case. She postponed the case to be heard on to August 10.

Justice Mahase was presiding on the case alongside Justice Semapo Peete and Justice Molefi Makara.

Chaka-Makhooane is also a former Magistrate that started her career as a Magistrate class 2 and then was promoted Magistrate class 1 and later a senior Resident Magistrate from November 1988 to June 2002.

Prior to her appointment as a judge, Chaka Makhooane also served the judiciary as a Registrar from July 2002 to October 2007.

While the Registrar of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Lesotho, Chaka-Makhooane also served as the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission.

Justice Chaka-Makhooane ascended to the judiciary in November 2008 where she has served till her untimely passing.
