Nthabiseng Machakela aged 20 from Ntširele, Ha-Pita in the Maseru, briefly appeared before Maseru Magistrate Court on April 22 on charges of murder of her 1 year 8 months daughter.
Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, said on April 21, the accused strangled the child with the intention of killing her.
“After realising that the baby was not dead in an instant, Machakela tossed the child’s half-dead body into a nearby dam in the village,” Mopeli said.
Mopeli said upon receipt of a tip-off, police went to the scene, then took the baby’s corpse from the dam and arrested Machakela.
Mopeli further said the cause of this brutal killing of an infant was the disappearance of the baby’s father since her birth.
“At the moment, the suspect is pregnant and it seems as though raising two children would put a strain on her, hence her decision to kill her baby,” Mopeli said.
He further said the accused was raised as an orphaned child and is suspected to be staying with her guardian.
Mopeli said Machakela is awaiting trial while still in custody and will appear before the court again on May 6.
“It is our plea as police that incidents that may lead to murder be resolved through communication in order to reach an amicable solution or get necessary counsel”, said Mopeli.
