Democratic Congress (DC) leader Mathibeli Mokhothu has told his party members at a rally in Matsieng constituency that a government led by his party will negotiate access to Sea for Lesotho with the Republic of South Africa.
Mokhothu, who is also Deputy Prime Minister of a coalition government led by Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro—All Basotho Convention deputy leader—told his party supporters that access to the sea is a paramount issue that a government led by DC will prioritize.
“We must prioritize having a canal that will grant us access to the sea to ensure we have economic independence. This would allow us to use water for the growth of our country’s economy.
“We must enter into negotiations and come to an understanding on this issue. Countries that are completely surrounded by other countries have rights that are internationally recognized.
“We must have such rights protected and Lesotho should be able to emerge from poverty and hunger,” said Mokhothu.
