A yesterday meeting of the All Basotho Convention (ABC) national executive committee and the Berea District’s constituencies committees saw party Treasurer Tlali Mohapi barred entry, an act indicating his fate after he was supposedly ‘fired’ from the party national executive committee.

Mohapi has told KDNews he remains the ABC’s Treasurer General amid his covertly orchestrated expulsion presented as his own volution.

KDNews understands the decision to axe Mohapi who works also as Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro’s Senior Private Secretary signals a deep-rooted plot aimed at weakening a faction in the party supposedly led by Mojoro.

Mahapi’s letter of dismissal from the party national executive committee disguised as an act done in his own volution is penned by party leader Motsoahae Thomas Thabane.

Thabane accuses Mohapi in the letter of alleged incompetence as party Treasurer General.

Part of the letter indicates that Mohapi, has since his election to the position in 2019, failed to perform his duties accordingly, even after being given a chance to prove himself and seek help where he feels incapable.

Thabane also notes in the letter that, while he was tasked by the committee to deal with Mohapi’s incompetence, he( Mohapi) chose to resign, with fear of being involved in the misuse of funds by the previous committee.

Part of the letter read,“On behalf of the National Executive Committee and its leader, whose job is to protect the party, we accept your resignation, given your lack of competence to the party since 2019 until now”.

Mohapi said he first saw a purported letter from Thabane circulating on social media platforms and only received it much later.

“Whatever that is going on, I can only address it before the party’s National Executive Committee,” Mohapi said.

Mohapi argues he remains the party Treasurer and has not resigned from his post amid the letter. He said there is

“When I first came into office in August 2020 I made a situational report that indicated the state of affairs of the coffers of the party. I discovered that there were people who remained signatories to the party coffers when they had no right to do so anymore. In two Bank accounts held with two separate banks former party deputy leader Nqosa Mahao and Mamoipone Senauoane remained signatories to the party’s bank accounts erroneously.

“So I told the committee we needed a forensic audit into the finances of the party in order to ascertain the actual state of party finances. That is what leaves people worried. I learned that there is a party investment that matures soon and when I wanted to understand what is going in the finances of the party there are people who get jittery,” said Mohapi.

But party Secretary-General Lebohang Hlaele told KDNews that Mohapi resigned in a meeting of the party leadership on October 11.

Hlaele said Mohapi resigned from his post citing he does not want to be involved in the misuse of party funds that he alleged was done by the previous party national executive committee.

Hlaele said Mohapi claimed to have discovered there was M70 000 that was expended without any supporting documents.

He said the party never expected him to resign through a letter as he was never issued any appointment letter when he assumed office.

But, Hlaele said amid the allegations that Mohapi mentioned of misuse of party funds he never compiled a nuanced report of the said abuse of party coffers.
